Central Valley. Monroe-Woodbury defeats its rival Pine Bush 5-1 in varsity boys soccer

On a breezy Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 21, the Crusaders hosted the Bushmen of Pine Bush in a varsity boys soccer match.

The game marked the first time the two teams have met since last year’s Section 9 Title game which the Crusaders won in a thrilling overtime shootout for their third consecutive Section 9 varsity boys soccer Championship.

The Crusaders entered this game with a 3-1-1 record after loosing 1-0 decision John Jay team High School.

The Crusaders came out fast and when Trevor Lagarde took a pass from Justin Ely and put in the Bushmen’s net it for a 1-0. lead.

The Crusaders added to their lead with a minute left in the half when Logan Yamamoto scored off a quick pass from Mwelwa Tetteh-Nartey in front of the Bushmen’s net.

Early in the second half Lagarde scored again, showing a tremendous burst of speed he ran down a perfect lead pass from Sean Brophy and scored.

With 24 minutes left in the game the Crusaders went up by four when Noah Rivera pounced on a rebound and drilled it in to the net.

The Bushmen got on the board when the Crusaders had a miscue deep in their defensive zone and the Bushmen took advantage.

Finally Ryan Guzman got his own rebound and put a shot past the Bushmen’s goalie and the Crusaders went on to a 5-1 victory.

The win brings their record to 4-1-1

Next up: An away match against the Warwick Valley Wildcats.
