Six Monroe-Woodbury seniors earn recognition from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation

    Central Valley — Monroe-Woodbury High School Principal David Bernsley announced this week that the following students have been named Commended Students in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program: Jisoo Kim; Angela Ko; Phillip Kossover; Annette Wang. In addition, Bernsley announced that Ugonna Eze and Ilanna Gibson have been named Outstanding Participants in the 2012 National Achievement Scholarship Program. Kim, Ko, Kossover and Wang will each receive a Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2012 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2012 competition by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Meanwhile, Eze and Gibson are among approximately 4,700 seniors whose 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test scores are among the top 3 percent of more than 160,000 Black Americans who requested entry to the 2012 National Achievement Program. This program, conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation, is an academic competition established to honor Black American high school students.
