Central Valley - Each year Boy Scouts race homemade cars in what they call a Pinewood Derby. This past Sunday, 81 scouts from Woodbury Cub Scout Pack 148 came out to Central Valley Elementary school for this year’s race. In addition to categories for designs of cars, in the finals for the racing itself, coming in first was Nicholas Duffner, taking second was Zachary Blasko, in third place was Zachary Walker and fourth-place winner was Danny Simons. Taking first place for overall best car was Cole Duffner. Six year old Zachary Blasko, who is a first-grader at Smith Clove Elementary School, said about making his car with his father Tim, “It was like doing a painting.” Zachary described his car, named Road Runner: “It has like a curve in the back. In the front it has like a horse picture and the number 3. My dad and I finished it last night.” Carmella Simons, wife of Cub Master John Simons, said Assistant Cub Master Robert Lutz was instrumental in planning the event. Every child went home with a ribbon or trophy and a lesson about sportsmanship and grace in competition. For more photos of the event, please visit www.photonews.com.
