School Board schedules 2005-06 budget hearing for Jan. 26

CENTRAL VALLEY-The Monroe-Woodbury School Board will hold a 2005-06 budget review meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the Education Center. If necessary, the meeting will be continued Wednesday, Feb. The current spending plan totals more than $110 million for a district that has more than 7,300 students. Town reorganizational meeting rescheduled to Jan. 24 Monroe - The Monroe Town Board reorganization meeting will be held on Monday, Jan. 24. Discussion regarding the Town Hall/Library project bonding is also included on the agenda. The meeting, originally set for Jan 6, had to be rescheduled because of bad weather. It will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Senior Center on Mine Road. Still time to pay taxes this month Monroe — The Town of Monroe Receiver of Taxes, William H. Bollenbach, will be collecting taxes at 15 Lake Street (next to M&T Bank) during January from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Taxes may also be paid by mail, addressed to P.O. Box 444, Monroe, New York 10949. For payments made during February, a 1 percent penalty is added; during March, 2 percent penalty is added. Unpaid taxes will be returned to the Commissioner of Finance on April 1. For more information, call 782-4459. Recycling schedule to 2005 The Town of Monroe, Village of Monroe and Village of Harriman recycling pick-up schedule for 2005 will continue on Wednesdays. Co-mingled recyclables are picked up every other Wednesday beginning on Jan. 12. Mixed papers are picked up on the alternate Wednesdays with the schedule that began on January 5th. Co-mingled recyclables include glass, bottles, jars, tin, aluminum cans and foil, plastic containers and cartons including juice boxes and frozen food containers. Mixed paper includes newspapers, magazines, cardboard, junk mail, boxes, office paper, paperback books and telephone books. Papers are to be tied in bundles no larger than 12 inches. Young M-W scientist honor Santa Clara, Calif. - Vedant Misra, a student at Monroe-Woodbury High School, has been named one of 300 semifinalists in the Intel Science Talent Search (Intel STS). According to information from the Intel Corporation, its talent search is a highly regarded pre-college competition whose winners have gone on to win more than 100 of the world's most coveted science and math honors, including Nobel Prizes, National Medals of Honors and others. Forty finalists will be announced Jan. 26. Misra's project is on "Quantum Tunneling of Electron Bubbles Generated by Neutrino Scattering." Stack and Scalia named to all-state team CENTRAL VALLEY - The New York State Sports Writers Association (NYSSWA) announced their annual all-state team for class AA. Both quarterback Matt Stack and offensive lineman Peter Scalia were named to the third team. For Stack, this is his second consecutive year earning the honor. On the ground, Stack rushed for 1,407 yards at the helm of the option offense and scored 23 touchdowns. He added 884 yards and nine scores via the air. Scalia, a four-year starter anchored the line that pushed the Crusaders to well over 3,000 yards. This year they led the Crusaders to a section 9 championship, and a win over Saratoga in the regional, marking the first time a school from Orange County has won a playoff game. The Class AA player of the year is Greg Paulus of state-champion CBA-Syracuse. The quarterback is ranked as the top high school prospect in the country by USA Today. However, he will play basketball at Duke next season.
