SaveMonroe on growth and taxes

To the editor: Having heard the concerns of our neighbors and fellow Monroe residents we have been working to improve our quality of life while speaking out on the issues that you have told us are important to you. It is very clear that growth and taxes are at the top of the list and we would like the community to know what we plan to do to address them. Monroe’s past and future growth will continue to bring the most staggering changes to our town and has been a concern of most residents. That is why dealing with this issue must be a priority. What we propose is to actively address the problem with the comprehensive implementation of smart growth policies that have been used effectively elsewhere. Re-vamping our zoning codes and subdivision regulations, and instituting natural resource protection and infrastructure based zoning policies will allow Monroe to control its own future. These methodologies are fundamental to any community that desires to protect their residents’ property values and their town’s local character. They are also what we have always advocated for and, if elected, we would have the ability to implement for you. Monroe residents have also made it very clear that rising taxes are a major issue and concern. While our Town of Monroe property taxes have seen modest increases over the years, consequently we have received no additional services or value added to the community as a result. Other communities have been very successful at securing substantial grants and contributions to improve their towns and Monroe should be able to as well. The rise in taxes that we all have seen can also be addressed in ways that are under the Town Board’s control - these include controlling growth and its resulting increased burden on our school system as well as bringing in more desirable commercial business to offset the school tax burden paid for by residential taxpayers. We propose to partner with organizations that can help us achieve those goals by bringing clean industry, medical facilities, professional offices, and small businesses to our existing business park, instead of enticing more big-box retail stores that will further compound our growing traffic problems. These are the solutions that we have been lobbying for and, if elected, we would have the ability to make a reality for you. Understanding the key issues facing this community is the first step and having a plan to address those issues is what’s needed. We believe we have that plan and with your vote, we can make Monroe a better place to live for all of us. Thank you for your continued support.
