SaveMonroe candidates on regional solutions to local problems

To the editor: Regional issues require regional solutions if we are to be effective in making lasting changes in our area. That is why we propose a plan of action for Monroe that includes working in cooperation with our neighboring municipalities to address the issues that are affecting us all. Growth in our villages and in towns such as Woodbury, Chester and Blooming Grove can have direct impacts on all of us. Increased traffic, the need for more space for additional students, the demand for more services and the loss of open space are all problems that we share. We believe that the only way to truly address these concerns is to work together. Although there has been some progress in addressing regional traffic issues, there is still much work to be done. Bringing the governing boards of neighboring municipalities together to discuss ways in which we can gain efficiencies and explore solutions to our common issues is the way to begin to effect meaningful change. Reaching across our boundaries, in a true spirit of cooperation, is what we propose. Additionally, we must look to maximize on the work that has already been done by other municipalities elsewhere in Orange County and across New York State. Our problems are not unique and much has been done in other communities to address the same problems and issues we are facing. We should be seeking out the best of breed practices that have already been successfully implemented and making them our own. We should not be wasting time (or taxpayers money) “reinventing the wheel,” but rather benefiting from the work of those communities that have been at the forefront of these issues and have turned their towns around. It can be done in Monroe and we deserve no less. We believe that Monroe is at a crossroads and its future depends on the leadership that you choose on Nov. 8. The direction that our town takes will be decided in the next several years and you have a unique opportunity now to make a majority change on the Board that will shape that future. We encourage you to make an informed decision and to join your neighbors in standing up for your town by voting for your choice for Town Board. Thank you for your continued support.
