Registration for the Summer Reading program at the Monroe Free Library is now open
Goal is for Monroe kids to read 5,500 books this summer Monroe - Registration is open now for the Monroe Free Library’s most popular children’s program, Summer Reading. Through July 5, library cardholders entering grades K-12 are invited to sign up to read books, make crafts, attend performances and win prizes. This year’s program carries the international theme “One World, Many Stories.” Over five weeks in July and August, the library will host more than 50 events for kids and young adults, including live musical performances, crafts for all ages, and Wii tournaments for teenagers. Admission is always free, but many events require advance registration. A schedule is available in the current issue of By The Millpond, the library’s newsletter. The kids put the “reading” in Summer Reading when they come to the library, once a week, to share what they’ve been reading. Younger children spend fifteen minutes with a teenaged volunteer reading and talking about what they’ve read; teens spend time with library staffers. Head of Children’s Services Melissa Quarles says her goal is for the kids of Monroe to read more than 5,500 books this summer. The library sponsors adult Summer Reading programs as well, with the theme “Novel Destinations,” in which patrons can attend cooking demonstrations, craft and gaming nights and trivia contests.
