Parks in Monroe set to take off
Monroe - Considering record high gas prices, residents within Monroe need not travel far this summer for outdoor recreational opportunities close to home. In addition to the ball fields and extensive adult and children’s programs in Smith’s Clove Park, the running track around the idyllic setting of Crane Park and the fishing and paddle-boat opportunities at Round Lake, the Village and Town Boards have recently been enhancing and creating other park facilities around town. Airplane Park on Mill Pond Parkway recently reopened with all-new playground equipment. The landmark F-86 Sabre Jet, a major feature in the park for many decades, was temporarily moved and cordoned off as a restoration committee investigates both the history and details of the Korean War-vintage aircraft. Village Mayor John Karl III said the goal is to restore the plane and elevate it on a stanchion in simulated flight. A new park under construction on West Mombasha Road is shaping-up with a planned opening in August, according to Town Councilman Jim Rogers. The 47-acre site is part of 104.3 acres recently purchased by the town and contains two ponds and will feature three soccer fields and a little league field. Other amenities will include a pavilion and concession stand.
