Monroe's Ice Age

The Monroe Historical Society’s program this Saturday, Dec. 10, is an examination of how the community got along before refrigeration, its ice industry and the coming of ice cream to the area. At left is a photo of Lou Boccarelli, taken in 1935, who took over the Brooks Bros. ice business and operated it through 1949. Below is a photo taken circa 1903 of the Alexander Campbell Milk Co. and Icehouse, where, the story goes, milk was first bottled in this country. Saturday’s meeting starts at 9 a.m. in the John De Angeles Hall on Lake Street in Monroe. (Photos provided by the Monroe Historical Society)
