Monroe has changed, but Leonard hasn't

To the editor: I met Sandy Leonard in 1961. Even then, Sandy was an active participant in our school government and affairs and in The Youth in Government programs. All those years ago, she was concerned about the well-being of her school mates and community. Fortunately, she has never wavered and remained true to her commitment to that community. I know that this dedication is part of her good character. It is an affront to me to hear anyone question her intentions for what is in Monroe’s best interest as it continues to grow. Sandy was a friend, leader and example to everyone all those years ago, as was her husband Ed. They never changed, Monroe has changed. The “SaveMonroe” group does not appear to be “for” anything. They only are clear about being “against” incumbent local government that has been responsible stewards of Monroe. They are also clearly anti-growth, especially in the Village of Kiryas Joel. They would, if they could, eliminate the zoning laws in some way so that the door would shut behind them or worse yet, select those who would live here and those who would not. If, years ago, Sandy Leonard and the people of the area felt the same way as the group that opposes her, they would be living in Rockland County and we would all belong to a group called “Embalm Monroe.” David S.
