Monroe - The Monroe Free Library has donated $441.51 to the Washingtonville 5 Firefighters Memorial Scholarship Fund, a component fund of the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan. For the last four years, as a tribute to those affected by the September 11th attacks, Monroe Free Library has collected money for overdue books and donated the proceeds to the Washingtonville 5 Firefighters Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Washingtonville 5 WTC Firefighters Memorial Fund was originally established to fund the expenses necessary to design, construct, erect and dedicate a monument as a memorial to the five New York City firemen residents of the Washingtonville area who gave their lives in the line of duty at the World Trade Center disaster on September 11, 2001 in New York City: Glenn Perry, Gerry Nevins, Robert Hamilton, Dennis Devlin and Mark Whitford. The Monument was erected one month prior to the first anniversary of September 11th. The fund now maintains the monument and awards five $500 scholarships annually to five graduating Washingtonville High School students to honor the memory of the five lost firefighters.
