MONROE-Monroe Bagels & Deli will hold a fund raiser for Steve Fischbein, head coach of Monroe-Woodbury's wrestling team, on Sunday, June 12, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fischbein is battling a blood disorder called multiple myeloma. He travels back and forth from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock to Monroe to be with his family and friends, attempting to lead a normal life as best as he can. Fischbein has made an impact on the community since the early 1980's when he won a section wrestling championship for Monroe-Woodbury. In 2000, he earned New York State Coach of the Year honors as Monroe-Woodbury ranked among the state's most well-rounded and respected programs. Deli owner Dave Hausman said people in the community are intent on helping the coach, but weren't sure how. So on June 12, when you order a dozen bagels at the deli, you'll receive 15 instead of 12 and $5 from every sale will be donated to helping support Fischbein and his family. Current and former wrestlers from around the county will be on hand throughout the day supporting Fischbein and the cause. MB&D recommends bringing your younger kids to meet the wrestlers and hang out for awhile. Monroe Bagels & Deli is located in the plaza behind the Monroe Diner on route 17M in Monroe.
