Marlins get a scoreboard

CENTRAL VALLEY - The Marlins (Monroe-Woodbury Swim Club) are a competitive swim club of 90 swimmers who use the MW Middle School pool both for practices and swim meets. They had wished for a scoreboard for many years, but were unable to come up with the almost $15,000 necessary for the upgrade. The school district also needed the scoreboard for their own varsity meets, but since they are on an austerity budget they were unable to help with the necessary funding. This is when the entire Marlins team, both swimmers and parents, rose to the challenge and began fundraising in earnest. They raised over $2,000 by holding a swim-a-thon where swimmers sought pledges for swimming hundreds of laps. The Marlins also held a fundraising dinner at Chicago Uno's and a shopping week at Modells. The Marlin Swim Team parents thanked the community for joining in the drive with their donations. "Without their help, we never could have purchased the scoreboard this year. For their financial contributions and support we send our thanks to Mobil on the Run, Coldwell Banker Currier & Lazier Realty, Ridgewood Corporation, Frontier Communications, Marshall & Sterling, Stalnaker & Sons, Monroe Jewelers, the Weeks Family, Dr. Jerome Goldberg, Dr. Donald Cohen, Dr. Norman Goldberger & Dr. Kenneth Joseph, James Sweeney, Esq., J. Bennett Farrell, Esq., Pediatric Arts of Monroe, M & T Bank, Bank of New York Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush, Alan Zuckerman (Verticon), K& M Newspaper Equipment, Frontier Communications, the Barber Pole, Pavia Chiropractic, Nepera, Mr.& Mrs. Eugene Currier, and Fran's Hallmark. We would also like to thank Amendola's, Little Italy and Triangle Plaza Deli for their gifts of food, and Bagel World, Bocci's Restaurant, Shoprite and Woodbury Common for providing us with wonderful fundraising opportunities." Marlin parents praised the coaches -- Tina Grigsby, Marc Gawron, Matt Doherty, Tony Vaccaro and Amy Beekley -- for a terrific season. Club officials thanked the parents of the swimmers who were so generous with their time and financial contributions. They also congratulated the swmmers for a great season. The Marlins finished 5th in the Empire State Swim League on March 20. Boys or girls, ages five through varsity level, are welcome to try out for the team.
