Love weeds, don't kill them

To the editor: I would like to make two points about Monroe’s proposed town law which includes regulating the “existence of weeds within a lawn.” Most people here drink well water, whether town or private. It doesn’t take much to imagine what happens to those lawn maintenance chemicals. They end up in our streams and are absorbed into our water table. My second point is that some weeds are actually super foods with very high vitamin and mineral content, and many people have a tradition of eating certain wild plants, such as dandelion greens. However, eating plants that grow by the road or on (or near) property with herbicides, pesticides and lawn fertilizer is clearly not a good idea. I, for one, find dandelions and other wild edible plants beautiful and delicious, and I see no reason to contribute to the pollution of our water supply by using weed killer.
