    Willy Wonka Jr., the musical, takes the stage Saturday and Sunday

    CENTRAL VALLEY ­— The following is a list of upcoming programs, meetings and events within the Monroe-Woodbury School District:

    Performances of the Middle School Musical Willy Wonka, Jr. are scheduled for Saturday, March 10, 6:30 p.m., and Sunday, March 11, 2 p.m.

    District Parentsteps meeting will be held Tuesday, March 13, 7 p.m. at Smith Clove Elementary and Tuesday, March 20, 7 p.m., at Sapphire Elementary School.

    Central Valley PTA will meet Wednesday, March 14, 10 a.m.

    Performances of the Central Valley Drama Club’s production Captain Louie, Jr. are scheduled for Saturday March 17, 7 p.m., and Sunday, March 18, 2 p.m.

    Women of Woodbury scholarship applications are now available

    CENTRAL VALLEY — Applications are now available for the Women of Woodbury scholarship program available to 2012 graduating students who reside in the Town of Woodbury.

    Applications are available at the local school guidance offices as well as in the Highland Mills and Central branches of the Woodbury Public Library.

    Monroe Free Library events MONROE — These programs are now open for registration at the Monroe Free Library:

    Friday, March 23: Meet Thomas Winship, the author of “Vaempires: Revolution,” from 7 to 9 p.m.If you enjoyed the “Twilight” series, you will enjoy reading this new vampire series by a local author. Refreshments will be served. Adults and teens. Free, buy registration required.

    Tuesday, March 27: Easy-to-make soups. 7 to 9 p.m. We will make Italian wedding soup and Mexican tortilla. Adults. $5 materials fee.

    State Senate sponsors Earth Day poster contest

    ALBANY — To celebrate and honor Earth Day this year, the New York State Senate is sponsoring a poster contest for children in grades K-6. The theme of our Earth Day celebration is “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.”

    Schools wishing to participate must submit their entries by Thursday, March 29, via the Senate’s web site at www.nysenate.gov/earthday2012.

    The winning posters will be displayed on my state Sen. William J. Larkin Jr.’s web site (www.larkin.nysenate.gov) and the participants will receive a certificate acknowledging their participation.

    “I encourage every student in grades K-6 to participate in this exciting poster contest,” Larkin said in the press release announcing the contest. “This is a wonderful opportunity for students to let their imaginations run wild and create memorable artwork that showcases the importance of our environment.”
