Did you know that the lotus flower grows in muddy waters — yet still rises above to bloom, clean and bright, a powerful symbol of perseverance and resilience — and the inspiration behind a recent SEL activity at George F. Baker High School.

As part of Tuxedo School District’s commitment to making social-emotional learning (SEL) a meaningful part of the student experience, high schoolers in grades 6–12 reflected on challenges they have overcome and how those moments helped them grow.

In social studies classes, students created personal lotus flowers by pairing words and phrases with each letter in LOTUS — capturing their strength, growth and determination.

Though the activity was anonymous, their collective stories now live on in a beautiful Wall of Flowers display in the hallway, reminding students and staff of the quiet strength our students carry every day.
