Thinking Day sparks awareness in the world

CENTRAL VALLEY More than 450 Girl Scouts and leaders recently participated in the Monroe Girl Scout Service Units annual World Thinking Day festivities at Monroe-Woodbury High School.
World Thinking Day is part of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts Global Action Theme based on the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, which aims to improve the lives of the worlds poorest people. This years theme was We Can Save our Plant and is based on Millennium Development Goal 7 focusing on environmental sustainability.
Forty-four troops each selected a specific country where Girl Guides - the name given to Girl Scouts in other countries - live. They prepared display boards, created SWAP (Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned SomeWhere) giveaways and provided a sample of a unique food item or drink specific to that country.
Organizers said the multi-cultural event was an opportunity to develop a greater appreciation of the commonality of the Girl Scout/Girl Guide movement worldwide.
For the first time, girls who completed specific activities were eligible to earn the first ever World Thinking Day award.
