Sales tax lifted on clothing and footwear

WOODBURY — Beginning April 1 there will be a state sales tax exemption on clothing and footwear costing less than $110 per item. The current tax exemption for clothing and footwear costing $55 or less is in effect until March 31.

“The doubling of this clothing and footwear sales tax exemption, which my legislative colleagues and I passed in 2010, will allow New Yorkers to keep more of their hard-earned money in their pockets, where it belongs,” said Assemblywoman Nancy Calhoun (R,C,I-Blooming Grove). “Woodbury Common Premium Outlets is one of the largest employers in the Hudson Valley and a first-class shopping destination. This exemption will help attract more shoppers to the area and keep our local economy healthy and viable.”

Calhoun said local governments also may enact the state sales tax exemption for their portion of local sales tax, which ranges from 3 to 4.75 percent.
