NEW YORK — The federal government is more than doubling emergency funding to New York state for road repairs after Superstorm Sandy.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said Friday the state will get another $20 million for needed fixes to roads, bridges and tunnels. That's on top of $10 million approved earlier.

A total of $19 million in Federal Highway Administration money has gone to New Jersey, North Carolina, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

New York is expected to use the money to repair signs, traffic signals and pavement.

Rep. Eliot Engel of New York says it's “a necessary first step" toward fixing the extensive damage from Sandy.
