MONROE — North Main Elementary presented awards to the latest group of students for “doing the right thing” earlier this week.

The “Do the Right Thing” award was named to honor Highland Mills native Christian Lopez, who did the right and honorable thing by returning Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter’s 3,000th career hit last July.

Lopez visited the school last fall to talk to students about the importance of good decision-making and always doing the right thing, especially if it’s not always popular. He stressed they should apply these traits in all they do.

This past February, he returned to the school when North Main formally launched its “Do the Right Thing” student recognition program. Lopez received the first award last fall.

North Main Principal Matthew Kravatz has repeatedly told students that “doing the right thing is a forever thing and is definitely a forever thing at North Main.”
