— Dr. Jennifer Roman has been appointed Orange County’s acting commissioner of health.
Dr. Eli Avila resigned as Health Commissioner on Friday after nearly five years of service to pursue other career opportunities.
“I am honored that the County Executive has asked me to serve as acting health commissioner,” Roman said. “I look forward to making sure that the Health Department continues to be at the forefront of preventing and responding to public health issues in Orange County.”
Roman has worked with the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office since April 2012. She was named Medical Examiner in July 2015.
Roman completed her fellowship in 2011 at the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in 2011 and her residency at North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System a year earlier.
Roman attended medical school at New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine, graduating in 2006.
She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from St. John’s University in 2002. Dr. Roman is board certified in anatomic and forensics pathology.
“I am leaving the position of commissioner of health to pursue other professional interests, as well as to join a private law practice in New York City,” Dr. Avila said. “It has been an honor to serve the citizens of Orange County, New York.”
A search for Avila’s replacement will begin immediately.
