College notes

Honors, awards, programs Emily Goff of Monroe has been accepted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Goff is completing her bachelor of science degree at SUNY New Paltz, graduating in 2014. She is focusing on psychology and criminal law.
Alexander Firestone of Highland Mills, a student at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn., has been inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, the international business honor society for undergraduate and graduate programs that are accredited by the AACSB International.
To be eligible for induction, students must be ranked in the top 10 percent of their junior or senior class or the top 20 percent of their masters class. In addition, they must also maintain a grade point average that is above 3.75. This is the highest honor business students at Quinnipiac can earn.
Vincent Dapolito of Harriman is the recipient of the 2011-12 award for highest grade point average from the school of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn. He will graduate in May with a degree in broadcast journalism and a minor in history. He is a 2008 graduate of Monroe-Woodbury High School.
Daniel Monahan of Monroe has been inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma honor society at Western New England University in Springfield, Mass. He is a junior majoring in finance at the university.
Brittney Singletary, of Monroe was recognized for outstanding academic achievement at Buffalo States 55th annual honors convocation on April 19. She is a journalism major at Buffalo State.
To qualify, students must earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have accumulated a minimum of 45 credit hours.
Katherine Ford of Highland Mills performed in Susquehanna Universitys spring theatre production of Diana of Dobsons, presented by the Department of Theatre in the Degenstein Center Theater from April 26-29.
Ford, a junior majoring in theatre production at Susquehanna, was a member of the production staff and served as master flyman. A 2009 graduate of Monroe-Woodbury High School, she is the daughter of Pamela and Bruce Ford.
Deans list Diana Smith of Highland Mills has been named to the deans list for the fall semester at Marist College in Poughkeepsie. She is a member of the Class of 2013. She is studying psychology in a five-year program that will result and a bachelors and masters degrees.
Graduations Timothy Hanson, son of Eric and Mary Hanson of Tuxedo, will graduate on May 12 with a PHd degree in neural biology from Duke University in Durham, N.C.
Dr. Hanson is a 1999 graduate of Monroe-Woodbury High School. He graduated magna cum laude in electrical engineering from Cornell University in 2003. His thesis at Duke University is titled Technology for Brain-Machine Interfaces.
His research included development of a wireless neural recording system that has application to control of prosthetics from the nervous system.
He also was involved in research on Parkinsons disease. His research included collaboration with research groups in Brazil. Dr. Hanson plans to continue research at the University of California at San Francisco.
Dr. Hanson is an avid traveler who always finds time for new experiences and adventures. He is well loved by his family and friends for his enthusiasm, energy and spontaneity. Those who know and love him know that he will continue to have a positive impact on our world.
Jessica L. Kosowicz of Monroe is scheduled to complete her graduate studies in business and marketing this year with a master of science in education degree at SUNY Oswego and will be recognized May 12 at the colleges 151st commencement.
