MONROE — Monroe Cadette Troop 502 recently completed the requirements for its Silver Award, the second highest award in Girl Scouting, by hosting three “Healthy Heart” workshops last month at Pine Tree Elementary designed to promote heart health and awareness.

The workshops — attended by 72 Girl Scouts representing the Daisy, Brownie, Junior and Cadette levels — took part in Zumba and Ballet programs courtesy of Beck Bailey and Kelsey Neubauer of M’Lainie Hunter dance in Chester; healthy food information courtesy of dietitians Christine Rauscher of the Monroe ShopRite and Kayleigh Lieberman of Vassar Brothers Medical Center; and EMS demonstrations given by the Monroe Ambulance Corps.

The cadettes — who each had to complete their own research and investigative work toward this award — gave Power Point presentations and created displays designed to alert girls and their leaders that heart disease is the number one killer of women.

Individually, they had to have a specific role in the group and had to spend at least 50 hours preparing their roles (including research, development and execution). The girls also had to attend a “Striving for Silver Seminar” and will shortly submit the final paperwork detailing the project, its community impact and how they plan to insure that the project has a sustaining impact throughout time

Additionally, they raised about $400 for the American Heart Association from donations from girls who purchased $5 red hair feathers and extensions. Those feathers and extensions were donated by Marla Cafarella of Fringe Salon.

Troop members are Alanah Abrahams, Heleena Anastos, Angelique Atlas, Julia Auerfeld, Kristin Fisher, Jessica Cueva-Scarpelli, Danielle Gonzalez-Wu, Alaina Neubauer, Kristen Neyer, Abby Ridgeway and Lauren Walsh.

The troop said it will continue to advance the cause of healthy heart awareness and would be glad to visit community groups to offer them the same presentation given to the troops who attended their workshop.
