Life, during war time,in the town of Woodbury

Central Valley - The Woodbury Historical Society’s Gatehouse Committee will hold an open house Sunday, Feb. 19, from 1 to 4 p.m. focusing on a sometimes neglected aspect of World War Two: While so many men and women went off to fight in Europe and the Pacific, what was it like in Woodbury “on the homefront?” Through various exhibits and displays, the open house will strive to tell the story of the folks who stayed here, keeping small town life going in the schools, businesses and local government, at home and on the farms, through rationing and by buying war bonds. Everyone contributed in his and her own way and Woodbury was ready to welcome home its soldiers when victory was declared in 1945. The Feb. 19 open house kicks off a series which the Gatehouse Committee is sponsoring which will focus not only on Woodbury in the 1940’s, but later will take a look at the 1950’s, 1960’s, 1970’s and 1980’s. The Gatehouse Historic Site and Learning Center is located on Smith Clove Road at Pine Hill Road in Central Valley. Admission is free and all are welcome. For information, call 845-928-6378.
