Larkin: Work will soon begin on interchange
Newburgh The New York State Thruway Authority will begin work next month on the route 84/87 interchange at Newburgh, according to state Sen. William J. Larkin Jr. (R-C-Cornwall-on-Hudson). This phase of the project is expected to be completed by spring 2009. Based on a bid of $48.2 million, the I-84/I-87 Interchange 17 Reconstruction Project has been awarded to the Pike Company from Rochester. “The interchange is a key piece to future economic development projects that will greatly impact Orange County” Larkin said. Some support facilities will be built and others relocated within the interchange, including maintenance facilities, the state police building, the toll utility building and portions of the toll plaza. Energy-efficient technology also is being incorporated into the design of the buildings and portions of parking lots and internal roadways will be relocated. The contract for Phase 3 is now being designed and is expected to be bid later this year. Plans include construction of all remaining roadways, ramps and bridges in the interchange.
