Kids read record number of books

MONROE-The lazy days of summer have not been so boring for area youth. Whether in a hammock, at the poolside, or up in a favorite tree, the youngest patrons of the Monroe Free Library have been reading book after book after book. As a result, the Summer Reading Program at the library has tallied a record number of books read by its participants. Children and teens at the library have read an amazing 4,103 books. "Reading during the summer is especially important," said Rebecca Lynn, head of Children's Services, "Reading helps to keep kids' school skills honed during the long vacation." Readers in the summer program kept track of their progress by checking out the bulletin board in the Children's Area in the Monroe Free Library. Library Assistant Charlotte Grossarth designed a striking board with blue apples representing books read placed on a flag background. "Our display fits in with this year's Summer Reading theme, New York is Read, White and Blue, said Mrs. Grossarth, "The apple is the official New York State fruit." Not only did children in the program have the pleasure of meeting new heroes like Harry Potter and old favorites like the Bobbsey Twins, but they had the fun of watching the number of apples on the bulletin board grow each week. "The kids enjoyed working toward a common goal and we hope this will inspire a life-long love of reading," said Mrs. Lynn. The Monroe Free Library, at 44 Millpond Parkway, has lists of suggested books for all ages and reading levels, so that children and teens can have the joy of reading year round.
