BUCHANAN-The Indian Point 3 nuclear power plant will be closed for about a week while workers fix an electrical circuit from one of the plant’s control rods, a power plant spokesman said Saturday. On Sept. 29, the control rod-one of 53 rods suspended over the reactor electromagnetically-went into the reactor on its own, according to Jim Steets, a spokesman for plant owner Entergy Nuclear Northeast. Officials identified the cause of the problem and needed to close the plant to make a repair, Steets said. The problem did not present any danger to the public, Steets said. The Indian Point complex is 35 miles north of midtown Manhattan. Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Sue Kelly said the NRC must further improve its handling of a safety concern that the agency says it continues to evaluate. “We won’t tolerate a lackadaisical approach when it comes to safety at Indian Point,” Kelly said. “The NRC needs to do a better job of responding to issues like this and communicating to surrounding communities and local officials.
