Highland Mills United Methodist Church dedicates Peace Pole

Highland Mills - Despite some gray skies, the Highland Mills United Methodist Church was aglow in red on Sunday, June 12, for a time of joy and celebration. The morning worship service was conducted outside on the church lawn and everyone was asked to wear red in observance of Pentecost Sunday which marks the conclusion of the Easter season and also the birth of the Christian church when the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles. The congregation also used the occasion to dedicate a Peace Pole as an important new symbol of what the church stands for. In her dedication remarks, Pastor Darlene Resling remarked that the Peace Pole is not just for the church but also for the entire community. It is part of the worldwide “Peace Pole Project” which strives to plant “The Universal Message of Peace.” The pole itself is a hand-crafted monument that displays the message and prayer “May Peace Prevail on Earth” on each of its four sides in different languages. There are tens of thousands of Peace Poles in 180 countries all over the world, each dedicated as a monument to peace and to remind people to visualize and pray for world peace. Highland Mills UMC’s Peace Pole is part of a Meditation Garden being developed on the grounds of the church. Everyone in the community is invited to come to the garden to pause in their day for some quiet time, for reflection and to meditate on the events of their life and their spirit in the midst of this busy world.
