Dowd tournament starts Wednesday
Harriman - The fourth annual Tommy Dowd Memorial Softball Tournament begins Wednesday, Sept. 7, and runs through Sunday, Sept. 11. Proceeds from the 16-team tournament will go to the Tommy Dowd Memorial Foundation. Dowd, a loving husband, an adoring father, a devoted son, a cherished brother, a good friend - died in the Sept. 11, 2001, in terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. He played in the Monroe Senior League in 2001 and led his team, Pool Tables Plus, to a championship. The foundation was originally set up as a scholarship fund for deserving student athletes graduating from the Monroe-Woodbury area. The fund has expanded to include other needs and causes that embody Dowd's spirit of dedication to living life fully. In addition to the softball tournament, the board is examining other fund-raising opportunities to take place throughout the year. The foundation is incorporated, with tax-exempt status pending. If you would like to make a donation, please make checks payable to the Tommy Dowd Memorial Foundation and send to: The Tommy Dowd Memorial Foundation, c/o The Monroe Senior Softball League, 17 Berwynn Road, Harriman, N.Y. 10926.
