Daisy petals earned through 'Little Dresses for Africa' project

MONROE Monroe Daisy Girl Scout Troop 64 has completed work for its Rose/”Make the World a Better Place” and Red/”Courageous and Strong” petals through its “Little Dresses for Africa” Project. The girls’ project entailed making their own dresses and donating them to African girls who don’t own a dress. They cut out a simple dress pattern, sewed the fabric into dresses and embellished them with frilly and feminine decorations. Their dresses were shipped to an orphanage in Africa, destined for girls who are the same approximate size as the Troop 64 girls and who will now own their own simple, yet frilly, dresses. “Little Dresses for Africa” began after a small group of ladies, returning from a short term mission trip to Malawi, began to sew simple little dresses, made out of pillow cases, to be distributed to young girls through the orphanages in Africa. Over 175,000 little dresses have been donated and distributed in 24 African countries as well as in Honduras, Guatemala, Philippines, Mexico and Haiti; and domestically within the the Appalachian Mountains and South Dakota. The Troop 64 girls hosted a fashion show at Sapphire Elementary School on May 9, showing off their creations. To learn more, visit www.littledressesforafrica.org.
