Cornell seeks volunteer produce pickers to assist in feeding the hungry

Middletown-The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Orange County is looking for volunteers to pick produce that local farmers are donating to food pantries and soup kitchens. Civic groups, families, individuals, and youngsters age 13 and over with adult supervision are welcome to participate. Volunteers will pick produce that would otherwise be left behind, including corn, squash, lettuce, potatoes, onions, and apples. A few hours of work can yield enough fresh vegetables to supply 1,000 servings for those who would otherwise go without. In 2003, over 74,500 pounds of produce were gleaned for local soup kitchens and food pantries. "It's a great way to help those in need, see how local crops are produced, and enjoy the beautiful Orange County countryside," Sandy Mehling of the cooperative extension.
