Civic Monroe: First night fireworks, street names and fire contracts in town
News from Monroe town and village board meetings,By Bill Lemanski Monroe - At its meeting Tuesday, the Monroe Village Board approved a First Night fireworks celebration for Saturday, Dec. 31. The New Years Eve fireworks display is presented by the Action in Monroe community organization. The celebration begins at the Village Hall at 11:30 p.m. where cookies and hot beverages will be served, followed by the 10-minute fireworks display. The fireworks will be released from Smith Clove Park. Street names During its Nov. 15 meeting, the board, at the recommendation of Trustee John Karl, approved the naming of five streets in the Woodroe Estates/Prestwick Gardens subdivision after Monroe residents who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. The street are Asher Court, Barnes Drive, Dowd Court, Marino Drive and Mazzella Drive. They are named for: Michael Asher, who worked for Cantor Fitzgerald. He was 53. Matthew Barnes, FDNY Ladder 25. He was 37. Thomas Dowd, who worked for Cantor Fitzgerald. He was 37. Kenneth J. Marino, FDNY Rescue 1. He was 40. Edward Mazzella Jr. He worked for Cantor Fitzgerald. He was 62. Fire services A public hearing was held prior to the Monroe Town Board Meeting Monday for the new proposed fire protection contracts: The Monroe Lakeside Fire & Rescue Company will receive $150,000 from the town for primary fire protection within Fire Protection District Zone 3 and secondary fire protection within the balance of the Fire Protection District for 2006. The fire company also will be paid $160,000 in capital funds for the purchase of equipment. For year 2006, the Village of Harriman will receive $189,167 total for primary fire protection within Fire Protection District Zone 2 and secondary fire protection within the balance of the Fire Protection District. The money will be disbursed this way: $116, 970 to the village for fire protection services, $18,107 to Harriman Engine Company 1 for fire protection services, $9,090 for the service award program and $45,000 in capital funds for the purchase of equipment. For year 2006, the Village of Monroe will receive a total of $173,811 for primary fire protection within Fire Protection District Zone 1 and secondary fire protection within the balance of the Fire Protection District. Of the total, the village will receive $126,000 for fire protection services, $21,811 to the Mombasha Fire company for fire protection services and $26,000 in capital funds for the purchase of equipment. The total cost in fire protection contracts for the Town of Monroe in 2006 represents an increase of $ 11,999 over 2005. The last of three meetings on the Town of Monroe’s Master Plan Update takes place Thursday, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m. in the Monroe Senior Center 101 Mine Road in Monroe.
