AB male plasma donors needed New Windsor — Community Blood Services is urging eligible male AB plasma donors to schedule an appointment to donate at one of its New Jersey or New York donor centers to help the center fill a request from the Department of Defense. The Department of Defense has placed an order for 400 units of Type AB plasma through America’s Blood Centers (ABC), North America’s network of non-profit community blood centers. Community Blood Services is a member center of ABC, and one of 14 member centers in this region’s hub and spoke system that provide blood or blood products when requested by the Department of Defense. Community Blood Services will collect some of the requested plasma units and ship them to a central location to be transported directly to the Department of Defense. Additional plasma is needed by the military to supplement its existing supply because collections are impacted by vacations, as is true throughout the U.S. during the summer months, and also by other factors the military faces at this time of the year. St Luke’s Center for Sleep Medicine accredited Cornwall - St. Luke’s Cornwall’s (SLC) Center for Sleep Medicine has been granted accreditation by the American Academy for Sleep Medicine (AASM). Officials said the AASM acknowledges facilities across the nation that provides only the highest quality of care. Using advanced diagnostics and the latest research in the field, staff will evaluate sleep patterns and devise a custom treatment plan to improve one’s ability to obtain sleep. DEC launches grant initiative to improve air quality and help reduce open burning ALBANY — New York state municipalities can apply for $60,000 in New York State Clean Air Grants to help manage residential organic waste that was previously burned and to build community understanding of the serious health and safety hazards of open burning. The amount of individual awards will vary up to $5,000. A wide variety of projects are eligible for grant funding including outreach programs to educate residents about outdoor burning restrictions and safer ways to dispose of organic waste materials that were historically burned. Also eligible for grants to purchase of vacuum leaf collectors, chippers and shredders as well as specialized composting equipment such as grinders and bagging equipment.
