Bird of a different feather visits neighborhood

MONROE - Peacocks aren’t a breed of bird native to the Monroe area, so residents of Aquarius Street knew this colorful creature made a wrong turn somewhere. Aquarius Street resident Debbie Fasanaro was among the handful of homeowners visited by this peacock earlier this week. For two days, the bird went from home to home, perching itself on decks and patio tables. “He made the rounds,” said Fasanaro on Wednesday afternoon, noting the bird was currently in hiding. “I saw him grazing around the grass. Then I found him on my deck, staring at me through the window. It made me think he was used to people. The kids in the neighborhood were getting a kick out it.” No one knows where the bird is now, but Fasanaro hopes it’s safe. “I haven’t heard any news from anyone,” she added. “I’m hoping it didn’t get hit by a car or that any wild animal has hurt it. I called the state police, but they had no reports of missing peacocks.” But on Wednesday night the bird was spotted again on the roof of another home, poised like a weather vane. “Tonight, on our way home from his game, my neighbors are all gathered around a different house ... the peacock has roosted on their roof,” Diane Leviseur of neighboring Jupiter Drive wrote in a note to The Photo News on Thursday morning. “He’s still around. We tried to get photos last night (Wednesday), but it was just too dark. My dream picture would have been to have the full moon with him silhouetted in it, but he just wouldn’t cooperate.” - Nancy Kriz
