    Richard A. Matthews, a 51-year resident of Monroe, passed away at home on Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2021. He was 86 years old.

    The son of Roy and Emily Matthews, Richard was born in Tuxedo.

    He worked as a maintenance mechanic for 35 years.

    Richard (“Cowboy”) was an avid outdoorsman. He was always hunting, fishing and hiking. His vast knowledge of archery was sought by many.

    Rich was also known for his sense of humor and his ability to tell stories. He always drew a crowd when he walked into a room.

    He will be missed by many, however none more than by his daughters.

    Richard was predeceased by his wife, Mary M. Matthews.

    Survivors include his son Rich Matthews Jr. of Florida; his daughters Doris Malloney of Middletown, Terry Dunn of Wurtsboro, Irene Conklin of Monroe and Lynn Daniel of Middletown; his sister Mildred Sarnecky of Monroe; as well as his 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

    A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Flynn Funeral and Cremation Memorial Centers, Inc. located at 139 Stage Road in Monroe.

    Cremation occurred at Oxford Hills Crematory, Inc., Chester.

    Cremation care has been entrusted to Thomas & Brendan Flynn and the staff of Flynn Funeral & Cremation Memorial Centers, Inc.

    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Richard’s name to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550 (hospiceoforange.com) or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 (stjude.org).
