NAACP remembers educator Wiliam A. ‘Willie' Carter

    Middletown — The NAACP of Middletown had the opportunity recently to honor William A. “Willie” Carter, who died this month at age 84, at its second annual Freedom Fund Dinner. Carter was honored for his energy, selfless determination, and years of dedicated service to the many young lives he touched in the community. Carter spent a lifetime as an educator, beginning as a physical education teacher, working his way into an administration role. He was the principal of Mechanicstown Elementary School for 22 years. Originally from Mamaroneck, his teaching career began in North Carolina. Upon returning to New York State, he received his master’s degree from New York University and an honorary doctorate from Mount St. Mary College in May 2003. Carter’s visitation was held at the Mechanicstown Elementary School gymnasium and his funeral service was held at the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Middletown, He was buried with full military honors at the Orange County Veterans Cemetery in Goshen.
