Highland Mills United Methodist Church welcomes new pastors

Members of the Highland Mills United Methodist Church recently welcomed new pastoral leadership.

As Co-Pastors, Rev. Karina Feliz and Rev. Julia Winward have been appointed to oversee a five-point United Methodist church charge that includes Highland Mills UMC as well as Mountainville, Cornwall, Vails Gate and Hudson Highlands United Methodist Churches.

Rev. Karina Feliz

Feliz is a native of the Dominican Republic.She and her husband, Graig, are the parents of three children. She graduated from Nyack College in 2012 and from Drew Theological Seminary in 2016.

She was ordained into the ministry this past June.

The pastor’s initial focus in ministry was working with children and youth ministry. She is social justice oriented with a special interest in the area of advocacy for immigrants’ rights.

She is also a writer and has authored works including “Embracing the Nothingness: Finding Healing in the Midst of Pain,” “Recognizing the Stranger: 10 Steps to Creating a Safe Community” and most recently, “Being a Sanctuary: From Mercy to Justice.”

Rev. Julia Winward

Winward was born in a small Siberian town in Russia. She and her husband, Matt, have two children.

The pastor spent her first 15 years helping her grandparents on a self-sustaining farm and also traveling as a dancer in a dance company. Her college years were spent in Dresden, Germany, studying engineering.

In 2000, Winward came to the United States to study for her teaching degree and became involved in the local Methodist church. In 2008, she began her ministerial studies at Drew Theological Seminary and is now finishing a doctoral program at Portland Seminary, focusing on the role of family in faith formation and discipleship.

Winward is passionate about creating intergenerational relationships in a spiritual setting, the healing power of the ministry and strengthening the body of Christ within.

All are welcome within the HMUMC family. Highland Mills worship service is each Sunday at 9:15 a.m. The church is located at 654 Route 32 (at Ridge Road) in Highland Mills.
