Meet the 2018 Girl of Merit: Katie Pack

“If more people were like Katie, our day-to-day lives would be better, happier,” says Jacqueline Pruiksma, Katie’s 6th grade flute tutor. Three years later, Pruiskma—and everyone touched by Katie’s kindness—is amazed by the Warwick freshman’s endless work ethic and generosity.
That’s why Katie Pack is this year’s Girl of Merit award winner.
Katie’s list of extra-curriculars is never-ending: band, Junior National Honor Society, track, equestrian association, cross country. In the midst of maintaining perfect attendance and juggling sports, music, and academics, Katie dedicates her free time to helping others.
As an avid and skilled horseback rider, Katie has found her niche at Winslow Therapeutic Riding Center, a non-profit in Warwick that provides equine-assisted activities and therapies to those with special needs. Katie helps in any way she can: from leading horses while trainers assist with special needs clients, to prepping the horses, helping out with all farm and barn-related tasks, and even sporting the Winslow Duck mascot costume at events.
She’s a mentor to her peers, often helping younger students with flute, and lending a hand to those struggling academically.
“Giving back is second nature to Katie,” explains Pruiksma. “Katie gives her all, giving back in ways we cannot always witness, applaud, or provide a trophy as recognition.”
