Youth Symphony hosts winter concert

CENTRAL VALLEY — The Orange County Youth Symphony will present its fourth winter concert on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 3:30 p.m. in the Monroe-Woodbury High School Auditorium.

The concert will start with the “Slavonic Dance” Op. 46 No. 8 by Dvorak, followed by “A Night on Bald Mountain” by Mussorgsky.

A chorus of OCYS parents, family members and friends will then join with OCYS orchestra to sing “The Ring” and “The Slighted Heart” by Dvorak, “Tancuj” by Raich, and “Ode to Joy” from the Ninth Symphony Finale by Beethoven.

The concert will conclude with one of the best known holiday piece, “On the Beautiful Blue Danube” by Strauss Jr.

Gabriela Mikova, a local professional singer, also will appear as a lead singer. Mikova is a graduate of the Janacek Conservatory in Ostrava, Czech Republic, performing her senior concert with the Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Georg Kughi.

She has also performed Leonard Bernstein’s Mass with the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Milan Machek, concerts with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Teplice under the direction of both Tomas Koutnik and Charles O. Munroe, and a concert tour through Spain, Portugal, Germany, Belgium and Austria with the Municipal Theatre of Brno. She has also sung at Ostrava’s Festival of Contemporary Music and at the Janackovy Hukvaldy Festival. She has performed as soloist at the Jiri Myron Theatre in Ostrava, the Moravian Theatre of Olomouc, and the Municipal Theatre of Brno, and for six years was engaged as soloist with the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Plzen.

Tickets will be available 30 minutes prior to the concert at $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and students.
