Monroe — The Monroe Temple of Liberal Judaism, Temple Beth-El, will present a concert, “Cantors in Love,” on Saturday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. at the temple. The featured husband and wife cantors are David Perper and Faith Steinsnyder, and Sergei and Elena Schwartz. The Monroe Temple Adult and Youth Choirs will also be performing in concert, which is part of the Jewish Music Programming series and is dedicated to the memory of Harry Hirschberg. “From the choir’s inception, Harry was an enthusiastic singer, with a beautiful voice,” said Elena Schwartz, the Monroe Temple cantor. “He loved Jewish music and was knowledgeable in the Yiddish language.” “Choir members all agree that Harry is deeply missed. He was always open to new experiences and loved learning new music. The program is designed keeping in mind what Harry would have enjoyed,” said Schwartz. Bringing his talent to the concert, Perper serves as cantor and music director at Beth Chaverim, in Mahwah, N.J. His work is focused on teaching, preparing and leading spirited and moving worship experiences, pastoral care, and B’nai Mitzvah preparation. Joining her husband in concert, Steinsnyder serves as cantor at the Village Temple in New York City. She also teaches at The Jewish Theological Seminary of America, at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, and at New York’s Academy for Jewish Religion. An accomplished singer and performer, Sergei Schwartz is Chazzan at Temple Beth Sholom, in New City, where he was recently honored for his 10 years of service. His greatest pleasure is to have everyone participate with him in the service, often with clapping and fervor. He is a member of the American Conference of Cantors and Cantors Assembly and teaches at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute School of Sacred Music. A singer and violinist, Elena Schwartz oversees the Bar and Bat Mitzvah program, supervises the Torah School and Torah Academy, participates in Life Cycle events, serves on the Pastoral Care team, and oversees all liturgical and educational music at Monroe Temple Beth-El. She is a member of the American Conference of Cantors and Cantors Assembly.
