SUGAR LOAF — Indie singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega takes the stage at the Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center this Saturday, Oct. 6.
The show starts at 8 p.m. on the main stage at the newly renovated venue. Vega is performing with Dublin-born guitarist and songwriter Gerry Leonard.
Vega, a New Yorker, has been playing guitar since she was 11 and began writing songs as a teenager. Her hits “Luka” and “Tom’s Diner” are the emblems by which many know her eclectic folk-inspired music. She was the trailblazer who paved the way for other female voices, including Tracy Chapman, Shawn Colvin and the Indigo Girls. She won a Grammy for her 1990 album “Days of Open Hand.”Her 1992 album “99.9F,” described as “technofolk,” was named Best Rock Album by the New York Music Awards.
In 1997, Vega joined Sarah McLachlan on her Lilith Fair tour, which celebrated the female voice in rock and pop. She was one of the few artists invited back every year.
Vega was also the host of the public radio series “American Mavericks,” 13 hour-long programs featuring the histories and the music of the iconoclastic, contemporary classical composers who revolutionized the possibilities of new music. Her 2007 release “Beauty & Crime,” is a reflection on her native New York City in the wake of the loss of her brother Tim and the tragedy of 9/11. But the record is not a sad one, per se; her love for the city shines through as both its subject and setting.
Vega has dedicated much of her time and energy to charitable causes, notably Amnesty International, Casa Alianza, and the Save Darfur Coalition.

Tickets are $32.50 to $47.50. Call the box office for tickets at 845-610-5335 or order them online at www.sugarloafpac.org.
