SUGAR LOAF — This Friday and Saturday evening, Aug. 28-29, at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m. the Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center will present a performance of the award-winning musical "Hairspray" at the Lycian Theater on Kings Highway.

"Hairspray" is the winner of eight Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Original Score.

The family-friendly musical is performed by Equity Broadway actors as well as local actors like Warwick business owner Tim Mullally and members of the Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Academy.

The production, which originally opened on Broadway in 2002, features 1960s dance music and downtown rhythm and blues along with lots of laughter and romance.

It's the story of Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with a big hair-do, whose dream is to dance on the Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program. And when that dream comes true, she becomes a celebrity overnight and triumphs over some of the injustices of that era.

As stated on its web site, the Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center is an all-volunteer not for profit community organization committed to the presentation and production of works of artistic importance to the community and the stewardship, management and sustainability of the facility.
