Newburgh — The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra, with Maestro Woomyung Choe conducting, will present a family musical event at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 22 in the Newburgh Free Academy High School Auditorium, 201 Fullerton Avenue, Newburgh. Opera singer Claudia Cummings will narrate Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf," a symphonic tale for children. Peter and the Wolf is an ideal way to introduce children to classical music. In the beloved musical fairy tale of young Peter and his animal friends, each character is entrusted to a particular instrument. The duck is depicted by the oboe, the grandfather by the bassoon, and so on. Also featured in the concert will be two remarkable young violinists, 14-year-old Madalyn Parnas and Vassar graduate Rebecca Bragg, in Viotti's Sinfonia Concertante for Two Violins No. 1 in F Major. At 6 p.m., Gordon Shacklett, cellist in the orchestra, will offer an entertaining and informative pre-concert introduction to the evening's music. Ticket prices are $20 for reserved seats, $15 for general admission, $12 for seniors, $5 for students. Children under 7 are admitted free of charge. Call 562-1800.
