Music in Central Valley presents program of Brahms, Gershwin and Debussy on May 12

CENTRAL VALLEY — Music in Central Valley presents clarinetist Susan Martula, bassoonist Stephen Walt and pianist Janice Nimetz in a program of music by Brahms, Glinka, Hindemith, Gershwin and Debussy on Saturday evening, May 12, at 7 o’clock,

Principal clarinetist of the Albany and Berkshire Symphonies, Martula also has performed as concerto soloist with both orchestras and with the Cornell University Orchestra under the direction of Karl Husa. She has played with the Lake George Opera, the Hudson Valley Philharmonic, the American Symphony and the New York Philomusica and performs as a chamber musician most notably in the Capital District and in Western Massachusetts. With the Albany Symphony she is heard on the Albany Records, the CRI and the Nonesuch labels. She is on the faculty of Williams College and Skidmore.

Walt is principal bassoonist with the Albany and Berkshire Symphonies and the Berkshire Bach Ensemble. He is Artist associate in bassoon and director of Woodwind Chamber Music at Williams College as well he has been on the faculty of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst since 1999.

Walt plays on a Heckel bassoon made in 1950 for his father, Sherman Walt, the former principal bassoonist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The instrument is nicknamed “The Brussels,” as it was exhibited at the 1958 World’s Fair in that city as an example of German artisanship.

Nimetz, the pianist, has appeared as soloist and chamber musician in the Hudson Valley, as soloist in Weill Recital Hall in New York and in Maine, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Minnesota. She is on the faculty of Emma Willard School in Troy and the Rockland Conservatory.
