Mount Gulian Historic Site launches living history Sundays
FISHKILL Two characters from 1848 will walk the Mount Gulian grounds and home this summer when two living history programs will be presented on Sundays, beginning June 5 at 1:30 p.m. The programs bring to life James F. Brown, a freed slave and diarist who worked at Mount Gulian for 40 years, and Mary Anna Verplanck, his employer. The programs include “From Slave to Mr. Brown” and “Kindred Spirits,” as well as in-character interaction with visitors. A portion of the performances in “Kindred Spirits” takes place in Mount Gulian’s garden, designed by Mary Anna when she was only 11 years old, and managed by James, the estate’s master gardener. Actors Jean Moss of New Windsor and Michael Monasterial of Beacon will recreate the historical figures. Visitors should allow 2 hours. Admission is $9 adults; $7 seniors; $5 youngsters, 6 to 16; tour of the house and garden is included. For more information call 831-8172 or visit www.mountgulian.org.
