MONROE — She taught Dustin Hoffman how to separate eggs for the 1969 movie “John and Mary” and made the spicy meatballs for Alka-Seltzer’s memorable Spicy Meatballs commercial.

For more than 30 years, Washingtonville resident Gail Piazza has tested and developed recipes and styled food for movies, TV commercials, print ads and packaging for such clients as Dr. Andrew Weil, Emeril Lagasse, All-Clad and Krups.

When her daughter, Laura Piazza, was diagnosed with Lyme Disease in 2008, Gail developed nutritious recipes for her daughter’s health and recovery,

The result is their collaborative cookbook, “Recipes for Repair.”

If you go On Tuesday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m., Piazza will share the story behind the creation of this popular health cookbook at a free educational event organized by the Monroe Free Library.

In this interactive event, she will also discuss foods to eat and foods to avoid when suffering from an inflammatory condition and wrap up by discussing the importance of prevention and early treatment of Lyme and other tick-borne illnesses.

She will provide samples from the book and have signed copies available for purchase.

The Monroe Free Library is located at 44 Millpond Parkway in Monroe. To register or for more information, contact the library at 845-783-4411.

About the book “Recipes for Repair” was born when photographer and graphic designer Laura Piazza, intrigued by the anti-inflammation diet from “The Lyme Disease Solution” by Dr. Kenneth B. Singleton, wanted to try the diet but, being accustomed to a dairy- and carbohydrate-rich diet (food groups not promoted in the diet), she hesitated.

Laura called her mother for some help. Using the list of allowable foods, Gail Piazza created several mouth-watering and wholesome recipes and sent them to Laura, who after preparing and taste-testing realized following the anti-inflammation diet was not going to be so challenging after all.

“When we moved forward with the book I developed recipes the way I always do – that is, food that looks beautiful and tastes great,” Gail Piazza said in the press release about her appearance April 17 at Monroe Free Library. “Just because you’re sick or need to follow a healthy diet you shouldn’t have to eat boring food. Our book allows not only Lyme patients but anyone desiring good health the freedom to eat meals that are both nutritious and delicious.”
