Sugar Loaf — The Kings Youth Theater, a training program of the Kings Theatre Company at the Lycian Centre, is expanding its training program to include classes for beginners and advanced students. The 10-week programs take place in the evening in the Pavilion at the Lycian Centre. This spring the program, for serious students of theater, offers two courses. For the first time a beginning class for middle school students is being offered. This class will be held on Tuesday evenings, beginning March 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. The second class, held on Wednesday evenings, is for students who have taken either of the past courses offered at the Lycian Centre or have had some training. The Movement for Actors workshop begins on March 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Linda Mensch of the Moving Company will be team teaching this class with Paul Ellis. Students who have not taken a workshop will be interviewed about their past experience or may be required to audition. The objective of the theater program is to provide young people from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to participate in a theatre experience that will develop confidence, responsibility, teamwork, and a greater sense of self and community. The beginning class will provide an overview of the acting process and introduce students to the basic elements of acting. The advanced class will concentrate on scene study and monologue development. This class is ideal for students who will be auditioning for college or professional theater. Both acting classes will include improvisation, scene study, movement and voice as well as internal process, rhythm and pacing. Having this program at the Lycian Centre will give the students access to a professional theatre space. Kings Theatre Company is also offering an eight week workshop for adults on Monday evenings, beginning March 7, from 7 to 9 p.m. This class is open to anyone who has an interest in acting or who would like to perfect their skills. The adult workshop is $250 and early registration is required. The fee for each ten week program is $275. To register call 469-2287 or visit the box office of the Lycian Centre Tuesday through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For information about the program or course content call 469-7563.
