Johnny comes marching home again

MONROE — As tradition stands, once again on the Labor Day weekend, Museum Village will be taken over by the Union and Confederate Armies. The museum will be transported back in time as our visitors have an opportunity to witness a very integral time in our country’s history.
On Saturday, Sept. 1, and Sunday, Sept. 2, guests will be able to visit the historic camps of both the Union and Confederate soldiers and ask questions about their lifestyle, weapons and the food they ate. Visitors will become eyewitnesses to the demonstrations of standard Civil War tactics and troop movements as the two armies meet near the quiet hamlet of Smith’s Clove.
The Sutlers, who were the merchants that provided goods to the soldiers, will be selling their 19th-Century style merchandise to the public.
“With this being the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War, there is a lot of interest and a lot of opportunities to witness history,” Michael Sosler, the museum’s director and general manager, said in the press release announcing the re-enactment. “This is Museum Village’s 37th Civil War re-enactment and we are looking forward to having our visitors really interact with the many Civil War regiments that are coming. We want our Civil War re-enactment experience to be special. Take the opportunity to really learn about life during this time.”
In addition to the re-enactment, there also will be the blacksmith, the potter, the printer, the broom maker and the candle maker working at their trades. And each of the other buildings around the green will be staffed with our knowledgeable interpretive staff.
