Film series is all about music

MIDDLETOWN-The 2004 Lyceum Fall Film Series takes in the sweep of music history, from the 18th century through the 20th. Each film will be accompanied by an introduction, and some by post-film discussions, one with a panel. All films will be shown in room 111 of Harriman Hall, located at the corner of Wawayanda and East Conkling Avenues on the Middletown campus of Orange County Community College. The viewing room was renovated over the summer with new, comfortable seats, floor lighting, and better access for disabled people. General admission is $2. All students are allowed free admission. • A Hard Day's Night, a film directed by Richard Lester, celebrates the 40th anniversary of The Beatles. To be shown on Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 7:15 p.m. Panel discussion by Richard Heppner, Jim Lynch, Mark Strunsky, and Greg Bray. • Woodstock, a film directed by Michael Wadleigh, received the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1970. To be shown on Friday, Oct. 15, at 6 p.m. The 225-minute film recounts the historic music festival that took place in August 1969 in Bethel, Sullivan County. Short introduction by Steve Harpst The Magic Flute, a film directed by Ingmar Bergman, is the opera film of Mozart's masterpiece. To be shown on Friday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. The cinematography of this Swedish-staged film was done by Sven Nykvist. Introduction by Geoffrey Platt. • Immortal Beloved, a film directed by Bernard Rose, is an exploration of the Beethoven's music and loves. To be shown on Friday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. Introduction by Geoffrey Platt. • Umbrellas of Cherbourg (Les Prarpluies de Cherbourg), a film directed by Jacques Demy, is a jazz operetta starring Catherine Deneuve.
