'Everything's coming up roses'

MONROE — The Monroe and Woodbury historical societies are hosting a program this coming Saturday, Oct. 3, focused on "Mama Rose" Hovick, the mother of Gypsy Rose Lee, the American burlesque entertainer famous for her striptease act.

She was also an actress, author and playwright whose 1957 memoir was made into the stage musical and film "Gypsy" that featured her mother as America's most notorious stage mother.

In film and on stage, Mama Rose has been portrayed by Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury and Bette Miller among many actresses.

Gypsy maintained a home in Highland Mills, where Mama Rose lived for many years.

The program on Saturday will focus on Carolyn Quinn's book, "Mama Rose's Turn." Autographed copies will be available at the end of the event.

Essential information• The program is free and reservations are not necessary.

• It will begin at 2 p.m. at the Town of Monroe Arts and Civic Center, 34 Mill Pond Parkway in Monroe in Studio 6 on the third floor.

• Light refreshments will be served following the presentation.
